Environmental Health: Environmental Protection and Private Sector Housing
Buckingham Futures ~ Residential Division
Today we focus on our Residential team, they cover these aspects of Environmental Health: Environmental Protection and Private Sector Housing.
Environmental Protection Officer
Environmental Protection Officers inspect and report environmental complaints or issues, which can either be reactive or proactive work depending on the team and the job.
Depending on their line of work and specialism, officers’ daily duties can include monitoring threatening levels of air, water, noise pollution and land contamination. They do this by taking samples of the polluted environment, identifying the problems, then recommending solutions to prevent issues from arising again.
Environmental Protection officers can specialise further into different aspects:
- Noise/ Statutory Nuisance
- Air Pollution
- Contaminated Land
- Water Quality
- Environmental Enforcement
Private Sector Housing Officer
Private Sector Housing Officers mainly undertake inspections in privately rented accommodation, ensuring that housing conditions are safe, suitable and secure for people to live in.
Officers would typically need to investigate Houses in Multiple Occupation (HMO) , defined as having 3+ people living in the same property who form 2 or more households and sharing common facilities.
Performing inspections in HMOs and single family dwellings HHSRS (Housing Health Safety Rating System) is needed to assess potential hazards (including personal hygiene, lighting, dampness, mould, etc) that could impact the health and safety of occupants and their properties.
They would typically have to deal with different individuals and organisations:
- Landlords and Tenants
- Housing Associations/Registered Providers
- Police, Fire Service and Immigration
- Government and Local Authorities
