What World Water Day Means to Buckingham Futures

Why is water so important?

Water is a vital human resource. Many people take having access to clean water for granted. According to the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals Report, 2 billion people did not have access to safely managed drinking water in 2023.

What is World Water Day?

World Water Day was created by the UN to inspire people to help tackle the global water crisis. It encourages education surrounding the current challenges that people are facing regarding water access. It is also the day that the UN releases its water development report.

The theme for this year’s World Water Day is “Water for Peace”. Tensions can arise between communities when water access is limited. “When we cooperate on water, we create a positive ripple effect – fostering harmony, generating prosperity and building resilience to shared challenges.”(United Nations). By providing access to water to more communities, we can create peace.

What Does World Water Day Mean to Buckingham Futures?

World Water Day is especially meaningful to the team at Buckingham Futures. CEO Ketan Dattani saw first hand how access to water can change a community. Buckingham Futures sponsored a well in collaboration with The Ugandan Water Project this summer and Ketan visited Uganda to see its installation through. The well represents more than just a water source; it’s a symbol of hope, health, and opportunity for the community.

To honour my family’s history, provide a legacy, celebrate Buckingham Futures’ 10-year anniversary and my half a century on this planet I have had the privilege to be able to give back to the community in the Eastern Region of Uganda where our family home was prior to 1972.

This World Water Day we reflect on our impact and look to the future for ways we can continue to make positive progress.

Water Conservation Tips

Water conservation strategies help manage freshwater resources. Water conservation is important to ensure humans have access to clean water now and in the future in order to sustain life. It is important to protect vital ecosystems that we rely on.

Additionally, water uses energy. Energy is required in order to treat, move and use water. This energy use contributes to CO₂ emissions.

To conserve water and avoid the detrimental effects to the environment that overuse can lead to, we urge you to follow these recommendations:

  1.  Switch off taps while brushing teeth/washing dishes
  2.  Take shorter showers
  3. Limit water use in gardens by choosing grass alternatives, and set timers on sprinklers when watering is necessary
  4.  Address leaky pipes by keeping rubber rings from the hardware store on hand
  5.  Update appliances like shower heads, washing machines, and dishwashers and choose new ones that are more water efficient

There are more ways to conserve water, but these are just a few that are easy to implement.

Together we can protect Earth’s most vital resource and ensure our future. How are you recognizing World Water Day?
