Buckingham Futures is currently seeking an experienced Environmental Health Practitioner or Food Safety Officer to support a proactive Local Authority team in North-East Scotland.

This is a strong opportunity to contribute to the protection of public health across a varied district, working with a mix of local businesses to maintain compliance across food hygiene, health & safety, and wider environmental health standards. The caseload will primarily focus on medium to low-risk premises, with a balanced mix of programmed inspections and reactive work.

The role is available on two engagement options:

Option 1 – Hourly Rate

Flexible hourly engagement
Compressed hours considered
Suitable for experienced officers seeking flexible or portfolio working

Option 2 – Per Inspection

Paid per completed inspection
Designed for officers managing structured inspection programmes
Ideal for experienced practitioners delivering independent caseload completion
Particularly suited to routine food hygiene and lower-risk premises work

Key Responsibilities

Enforce legislation relating to food hygiene, food standards, health and safety, and public health
Undertake programmed and reactive inspections across Category C & D premises
Investigate food complaints, food poisoning cases, accidents, and statutory notifications
Carry out enforcement action in line with the Food Law Code of Practice, including notices where required
Conduct PACE interviews and prepare robust case files
Provide clear, proportionate guidance and support to businesses
Work collaboratively with partner agencies to achieve compliance outcomes

About You

Proven experience delivering food safety inspections and enforcement work
Competent working under the Food Law Code of Practice
Strong understanding of relevant Environmental Health legislation
Experience preparing evidence and conducting PACE interviews
Strong organisational skills and ability to manage your own caseload effectively

Qualifications

BSc/MSc in Environmental Health (EHRB or REHIS accredited), or
Higher Certificate in Food Control with substantial enforcement experience
Alternatively, applicants holding REHIS Professional Diploma or equivalent Environmental Health qualification will also be considered where substantial competent authority experience can be demonstrated
