Buckingham Futures are seeking an experienced Environmental Protection Officer / Planning Response Officer to provide specialist support to a local authority in Yorkshire.

This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced Environmental Protection professional seeking remote or hybrid working flexibility. The role can be undertaken predominantly remotely, with the ability to provide specialist planning consultation support on a flexible basis.

The successful candidate will be responsible for reviewing and responding to complex planning applications, providing expert environmental protection advice and ensuring environmental considerations are appropriately addressed within the planning process.

This role would suit an experienced Environmental Protection professional with strong planning consultation experience who can confidently manage a varied workload while maintaining high technical standards.

Key Responsibilities

  • Review and provide professional responses to planning applications, including complex and sensitive developments.
  • Provide specialist environmental protection advice to support planning decisions.
  • Assess environmental impacts associated with proposed developments.
  • Prepare clear, evidence-based consultation responses.
  • Evaluate applications relating to noise, air quality, contaminated land and wider environmental protection matters.
  • Identify potential environmental risks and recommend appropriate mitigation measures.
  • Interpret technical reports and provide professional recommendations.
  • Manage a workload of approximately 5–10 planning applications per day, depending on complexity.
  • Work independently and provide reliable support remotely on an ad hoc basis.

Essential Requirements

  • Significant experience working within Environmental Protection, Environmental Health or a related local authority environment.
  • Strong experience in planning consultations and responding to development proposals.
  • Proven ability to manage complex planning applications and deliver high-quality technical responses.
  • Strong technical knowledge and practical experience in:
    – Noise assessment and control, Air quality Contaminated land
  • Excellent written communication skills with the ability to produce accurate and professional reports and consultation responses.

Working Arrangement

  • Remote / hybrid working available.
  • Flexible ad hoc support required.
  • Approximately one day per week, with flexibility across Monday to Sunday depending on workload requirements.

  • The successful candidate will be an experienced Environmental Protection professional who can provide immediate value through strong technical knowledge, sound judgement and the ability to manage complex planning consultations independently.
  • Experience within a Senior Environmental Protection or Planning Response role would be highly desirable.
