Buckingham Futures is currently recruiting for an experienced Environmental Protection Officer / Environmental Health Officer to join a local authority Environmental Health service in Greater London on a contract basis.

This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced Environmental Protection professional to take on a varied and rewarding caseload of statutory nuisance investigations and environmental enforcement work across the borough.

Please note: this role is ideally suited to a fully qualified Environmental Health Officer.

Candidates holding a recognised Environmental Health qualification are highly desirable. However, we would also be interested in hearing from individuals with significant local authority experience in Environmental Protection, statutory nuisance investigations, waste enforcement, or pest control who can demonstrate the practical knowledge and competency required to undertake the duties of the role.

The successful candidate will manage a varied Environmental Protection workload, including investigation, regulation, and enforcement across a wide range of environmental health matters.

Key responsibilities will include:

  • Investigating complaints and undertaking enforcement action relating to:
    – Statutory nuisance, including: Noise pollution, Smoke complaints, Dust emissions, Odour complaints, Other environmental nuisance matters
    – Waste and refuse accumulation
    – Pest control and vermin-related issues
  • Managing complaint investigations and Environmental Protection cases from initial enquiry through to resolution
  • Preparing evidence, witness statements, statutory notices, and enforcement documentation where required
  • Undertaking site visits, inspections, and investigations across the borough
  • Working in accordance with the Environmental Protection Act 1990, Prevention of Damage by Pests Act 1949, and other relevant environmental legislation
  • Managing a reactive Environmental Protection caseload independently while maintaining accurate case records

Essential requirements:

  • Ideally a fully qualified Environmental Health Officer holding a recognised Environmental Health qualification
  • Alternatively, significant local authority experience within Environmental Protection, statutory nuisance, waste enforcement, or pest control investigations
  • Experience working under the Environmental Protection Act 1990, Prevention of Damage by Pests Act 1949, and associated environmental legislation
  • Strong knowledge of Environmental Protection legislation, enforcement powers, and regulatory processes
  • Confident undertaking site visits, inspections, complaint investigations, and enforcement action
  • Able to manage a varied workload and prioritise competing demands

The successful candidate must be able to attend the office when required and undertake site visits across the borough.
