Buckingham Futures is working with a Local Authority in the East of England as they search for a Building Control Surveyor for a 6-month period.
Rates – £60/hr (Umbrella Ltd)
Role Overview
The Building Control Surveyor ensures that building work complies with the Building Regulations, Building Act 1984, and associated legislation. The role involves assessing plans, inspecting building work on site, and taking corrective or enforcement action where standards are not met, helping to protect public health, safety, and welfare.
Key Responsibilities

Assess plans and carry out site inspections for domestic and low-risk non-domestic developments

Manage a caseload of building control applications, including new builds, regularisations, and reversions

Make regulatory decisions within the scope of competence and Building Safety Regulator framework

Investigate complaints, unauthorised works, dangerous structures, and demolition matters

Initiate and support enforcement action, including issuing notices and acting as an expert witness when required

Provide professional advice and guidance to developers, contractors, and the public

Maintain accurate records and contribute to service quality standards, including ISO 9001
-
Participate in out-of-hours rotas and work flexibly to meet service demands
Working Context
-
Role requires registration (or working towards registration) with the Building Safety Regulator
-
Operates with a high level of autonomy within validated competence

Involves site-based work across the local authority area, including potentially hazardous environments
Skills, Knowledge & Experience
-
Experience in Building Control and local authority procedures

Strong knowledge of construction methods and Building Regulations
-
Ability to interpret plans, conduct inspections, and write clear technical reports

Excellent communication and ICT skills
-
Strong customer focus and ability to work with diverse stakeholders
Qualifications & Requirements

Level 4 or 5 qualification in Building Control or a related field

Corporate membership of a relevant professional body (e.g. RICS, CABE)

Registration (or progression towards) with the Building Safety Regulator
-
Willingness to work flexibly, including out-of-hours and site-based duties
