The Role
You will provide clear strategic direction and effective operational leadership across private sector housing services, ensuring compliance, continuous improvement, and high-quality service delivery.
Key responsibilities include:
- Setting the strategic vision for private sector housing services
- Leading, managing, and developing a high-performing professional team
- Overseeing HMO licensing, enforcement activity, and housing standards compliance
- Driving service improvement initiatives to enhance efficiency and outcomes
- Ensuring full compliance with housing legislation, policy frameworks, and best practice
- Managing service budgets and monitoring performance against agreed targets
- Working collaboratively with internal teams, partners, and external stakeholders
- Representing the authority at senior meetings, tribunals, and legal proceedings where required
About You
You’ll bring substantial experience in private sector housing or environmental health, along with the confidence to operate at a senior, strategic level.
This role would also suit a highly experienced officer with strong leadership and management skills, the initiative to influence service delivery, and the ambition to take the next step into a senior management position.
Essential experience includes:
- Managing private sector housing or environmental health services
- Strong working knowledge of Housing Act 2004 and HHSRS
- Proven leadership and team management capability
- Experience delivering service improvement and operational change
- Budget management and strategic contribution experience
- Excellent communication skills and stakeholder engagement
Relevant qualifications in Environmental Health or Housing are desirable, and CIEH membership would be advantageous.
