Buckingham Futures are currently recruiting for an experienced Environmental Health Officer / Trading Standards Officer on behalf of our Local Authority client based in the Midlands.
This is an initial 6-month contract, with the potential for extension. To undertake inspection, investigation, and enforcement work with a primary focus on Food Standards and Trading Standards compliance, including food composition, labelling, allergen information, misdescription, and weights and measures. The role involves ensuring businesses comply with relevant legislation, providing clear regulatory advice, and supporting proportionate enforcement action where required.
Key Responsibilities
- Carry out Food Standards and Trading Standards inspections of commercial premises
- Investigate compliance issues relating to food labelling, composition, presentation, and misdescription
- Undertake weights and measures enforcement activity, including verification checks and sampling where required
- Conduct revisits and follow-up inspections to ensure compliance
- Provide clear, proportionate advice to businesses on legislative requirements
- Identify breaches and determine appropriate enforcement action in consultation with senior officers
- Serve statutory notices and prepare witness statements to support enforcement action or legal proceedings
- Deal confidently with non-compliant or challenging traders
- Undertake legal research and interpret complex legislation to support decision-making
- Escalate serious or complex matters to the Trading Standards Manager / Senior EHO as appropriate
- Maintain accurate records and support enforcement case progression
Knowledge, Skills & Experience
- Relevant qualification in Trading Standards (DCATS / Diploma) or Environmental Health (CIEH / REHIS equivalent)
- Strong working knowledge of Food Standards legislation, including:
– Food Information Regulations (labelling & allergens)
– Consumer Protection from Unfair Trading Regulations Food Safety Act (Food Standards provisions)
– Weights and Measures / Legal Metrology legislation - Experience in Food Standards enforcement, inspections, and investigations
- Ability to assess risk and apply proportionate enforcement action
- Confident dealing with traders and complex compliance issues
- Strong report writing and statement preparation skills
- Understanding of regulatory enforcement principles and legal processes
- A Quality Assurance qualification (e.g. Lead Auditor) would be beneficial but is not essential.
