HGV Mechanic – West Midlands x 2

Hours: 37 hrs per week

Rate: Competitive

Contract length 3 – 6 months

Our clients based in the West Midlands are looking for two HGV Mechanics to:

  • Inspect, repair and service the Council’s wide range of vehicles,  small plant and agricultural equipment including Refuse collection vehicles, sweepers, tippers, mowing equipment, small tractors, chainsaws, hedge cutters, strimmers, blowers, etc……
  • Carry out MOT tests and retests on class 4, 5 and 7 vehicles
  • Carry out taxi tests to the standards set by both Bromsgrove and Redditch Councils.
  • Navigate around the districts and attend breakdowns and undertake necessary repairs or facilitate the vehicles recovery back to the depot.
  • Therefore knowledge of Health and Safety procedures is essential.
  • Be prepared to work a split shift arrangement if required to meet the needs of the service.
  • Be prepared to work from either of our two workshops if required to meet the needs of the service.
  • Cover periods of leave and sickness within the workshop also work bank holidays when the front line operational staff are working.
  • Be prepared to be available in order to provide cover during periods of emergency works, winter maintenance and special events as required.
  • To work flexibly to cover the needs of the service, working 37 hours per week, between 6:30am – 6pm Mon – Fri.
  • To train staff to carry out minor repairs and basic maintenance of plant and machinery and to monitor that the work is carried out to the necessary standards
  • To investigate and deal with enquiries from customers,
  • To act on own initiative with regard to workload / work prioritisation.
  • To liaise with contractors when required
  • Drive vehicles up to 26 tonnes (LGV)



  • Practical Mechanical understanding of the maintenance of HGV commercial vehicles, cars and plant
  • To be able to prioritise work as required on a service need basis
  • To be able to work in a methodical and efficient manner
  • To be able to work under pressure, maintain a high standard of work and attitude
  • The operation of computer-based software and IT auditing systems
  • To be physically able to perform practical garage work


  • The ability to operate a front loader
  • The ability to operate a forklift truck



  • LGV inspection and testing standards and principles
  • Fault diagnosis of electrical, hydraulic, and pneumatic systems
  • Commercial garage operations
  • MOT legislation


  • Light vehicle maintenance and repair
  • Commercial Fleet operation and legislation



  •  Minimum of 5 years of practical mechanical maintenance of HGV commercial vehicles


  • Light vehicle service and repair
  • Experience in maintaining waste vehicle and road sweepers
  • Experience with the operation of garage management and ordering software



  • City and Guilds Motor Vehicle Maintenance and Repair level 3 or equivalent qualification.
  • LGV Class C driving licence


  • Up to date MOT testers qualification
  • Vehicle inspection accreditation
  • Operators CPC qualification
  • Assessment and writing Risk assessments
